6 Tips to keep your sanity and help you save money this Thanksgiving.

If you are in charge of cooking this year a good plan will help you save you a bunch of money and stress!

Get a good headcount

This will help you figure out how much meat you need.  The stores are offering a free turkey or ham and depending on your family’s need you can get something that will work.  They offer discounts on a full frozen, full fresh, turkey breast and organic meats. Some of these choices do cost some money, but when regular price is above $2/pound and the discount is down to $1/pound it is worth it!  Take advantage of being in the kitchen and get as much as you possibly can for free, or at a discount, and freeze the leftovers.

We are all getting ready for Thanksgiving, right?!  After all it is in less than two weeks.  Despite the stores pushing Christmas on us already I am still planning for Thanksgiving.  I cook the meal and family and friends that want to come are welcome to attend.

Weekly wrap up in the Gillem household

I am so blessed to have to get up early to go to work. At times it doesn’t seem like a good thing to have to get up so early and leave my family and drive so far. And then God gives me these beautiful sunrises.

The amazing sunrises I see are truly gifts from God and make the drive much more enjoyable!

Happy Birthday USMC!

My devil dog was/is a Marine!  He served his country and was, thankfully, honorably discharged without any injuries!  Praise God.  I am so blessed to have him in my life and he is the best father to our children.  The girls and I celebrated the birthday by making cupcakes with the Marine Corps colors, red and gold!  Happy Birthday, Semper Fidelis and Ooh Rah!

After a full day of being working mommy; I come home to mass chaos

Being a working mom outside the home definitely poses its challenges.  Yesterday I got home 30-45 minutes later than expected due to traffic.  Needless to say I came home a bit grumpy and when I got home it was mass chaos and children fighting for attention.  I got home and immediately had to start dinner as some of the grumpiness was the “hunger mood” (please tell me my children aren’t the only ones that experience it).

The meal for the night was breakfast. The kids and hubs wanted waffles so I started making the batter. Squeakers and Bananas helped pour the measuring cups of flour, salt and baking powder into the mixing bowls so they got time with mom and were helpers.  Then while I was mixing up the batter and getting into the waffle iron, Devil Dog was having the girls hand him eggs so he could crack them for scrambled eggs. Tank was happy just playing with his toys…and having them all to himself!

After I poured the batter into the waffle iron it was time to make the eggs. The timing went very smooth and we worked together as a family. When I first got home I was very stressed about time. We enjoyed dinner as a family and Bananas cleared some of the table when we were done.

She needed to work on some reading work and was not listening to Devil Dog when I got home so we took the Bible and read!  We looked up the word respect and then I let her find some verses to read.  She was so excited and did so good reading on her own.  I just had to keep my finger under the word she was reading.

After that is was bedtime! Phew! I put Tank to sleep while the girls worked on their “lists”. I posted a bedtime list in the bathroom to remind them to change clothes, brush teeth, go to bathroom and get a drink of water.

Finally the house was quiet and I was exhausted so I joined the kids in dreamland.

Being a working mom involves lots of balance and struggles. I try to remember my successes instead of failures and realize that instead of cleaning the floors spending time with my kids is more important. I was thrilled when Bananas asked to read the Bible. I was able to instill a good foundation in her and she was working on her schoolwork. Win-win for everyone!

Meet the Gillem family:

Hey everyone!  I am a working mom, as I am sure you gathered from the blog name!  I work as a pediatric nurse case manager.  I love what I do at the children’s hospital I work for but I also love my home life.  I hate being away from my kids but hope that I am making a difference in the lives of the sick kids.  I try to keep everything in order and here is where I will share whats going on in my life. I will share what does work (and what doesn’t work) for our family. And maybe along the way, we can help each other try to find out what makes for a smooth life at home!  First off…time to meet the family!
